On the Nose Privacy Policy

On the Nose is a private tasting journal for spirits and wine. It is built and operated by Hartwig Design Studio LLC, 5170 Aurora Ave, Apt 412, Fitchburg, WI 53711.

This policy explains what On the Nose collects, why, who else sees it, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

What we collect

Your account. Your email address, used to sign you in. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the email address that service gives us. There is no password to store, because the app does not use one.

What you tell us about your taste. Your display name, how you described yourself during onboarding, your answers to the taste questions, and any spirits you asked us to avoid.

Your journal. The drinks you log: name, producer, date, your notes, your rating, and your impressions.

What the app builds from that. A taste profile derived from your entries, and its history over time, so the app can tell you how your palate has moved.

Your activity in the app. Your scan history and the drinks each scan matched, your want-to-try list, predictions the app made for you, follow-ups waiting on your home screen, and tastings you started but did not finish.

Your conversations. The messages you send in chat, and the app’s replies.

How you use the app. A lightweight record of what happens as you go: a drink logged, a tasting begun, onboarding finished. Each event carries your account when you are signed in, and a random per-install tag when you are not, so we can tell which parts of the app earn their place and which do not. It stays on our own servers. No third party ever sees it, and it is never used to advertise to you or to follow you anywhere else.

Roughly where you are, only to find the bar. When you tap the venue field to record where you had a drink, the app can use your approximate location to put the places near you at the top of the list. It is rounded to about a kilometre before it ever leaves your phone, used only to sort that one search, and dropped as soon as it is done. It is never saved, and never attached to the drink you logged. Decline it and the app works the same, matching venues by name. It will not ask again.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your precise location, your contacts, your calendar, health data, your browsing activity outside the app, or advertising identifiers.

We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting services. There is no third-party tracking software in the app of any kind.

We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not use your journal or your conversations to train AI models.

Photos, and what happens to them

When you photograph a bottle label or a drinks menu, that image is sent to be read and is not stored anywhere. Not on our servers, not in a bucket, not in a backup. It exists only for the moment it takes to read it, and then it is gone.

What we keep is the result: the name of the bottle, the producer, the style, and for a menu, the drinks it listed. Not the picture.

If you pick a photo from your library instead of taking one, the same is true. We receive only the image you chose, and only for as long as it takes to read it.

Artificial intelligence, and who processes your text

On the Nose uses AI models provided by Anthropic to do three things: read the photos described above, answer your questions in chat, and help build your taste profile.

This means that when you scan something or use chat, the image or the text is sent to Anthropic to be processed, and their systems see it. Anthropic acts as our processor: they handle it on our instructions in order to return a result to you.

Your journal entries are not sent to Anthropic except where they inform a request you have made, such as a chat message or a profile calculation.

Where your data is stored

Your account and everything attached to it live in Supabase, a hosted Postgres provider, with encryption in transit and at rest and row-level security so that your rows are readable only by your account.

Some of your data also lives on your own device so the app works without a connection, and syncs when you sign in.

We store data in the United States.

That is everyone. There is no one else.

How long we keep it

Your data stays until you delete it. Scanned images are never kept at all, as described above.

Some lists are capped by the app itself and roll over as you use it: scan history keeps your most recent 25, chat keeps your most recent 40 conversations, and the want-to-try and prediction lists keep 50 each.

Your choices

Take your data with you. Settings has an export that produces a JSON file of your journal and profile, which you can save anywhere you like.

Delete everything. Settings has account deletion, and it is real deletion rather than deactivation. It removes your account and everything attached to it: journal, profile, chat, scan history, lists, all of it. It happens immediately, it cannot be undone, and it does not require emailing us to ask.

We extend the rights above to everyone who uses On the Nose, wherever they live, rather than only where a law requires it.

Age

On the Nose is for people old enough to drink where they live, and the app asks before you begin. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us data, write to us and we will remove it.

Security

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is restricted to your own account at the database level. No system is perfect, and we will not pretend otherwise, but we do not collect what we do not need, and the single most sensitive thing the app touches, your photographs, is never stored at all.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will say so in the app rather than quietly editing the page. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
